Library Minute: Welcome Back!

On behalf of the University of Richmond Libraries, I thank all faculty and staff for your efforts over the last year. We have come far together and will continue our growth throughout the upcoming academic year. Library staff worked hard and creatively to support faculty, staff, and students through this challenging year. We all look forward to seeing new and familiar faces in the libraries once again.

Boatwright Memorial Library continues to adapt and grow with us. Beginning last May, our valued colleagues in Facilities started our library’s renovation and renewal process. Beginning on basement level two (B2), we gathered our book and journal collections on a single floor to make them easier to access and locate. In addition, we replaced HVAC, installed a new chiller and dehumidification equipment, added LED lighting, new carpet, paint, and sprinklers.

We ask for your patience as we finish construction on this floor. Our goal is to have work on level B2 completed by September 10.

Later in September, Facilities will turn their efforts to basement level one (B1). Once all books shift from level B1 to level B2, level B1 will close for the remainder of the 2021-2022 academic year. Behind the temporary construction walls will rise an expanded Galvin Rare Book Room and a new space for our thriving Book Arts Studio. We will enhance student study and work spaces on this floor with new furniture and amenities and create new spaces for researchers, archival processing, and collection storage. Finally, an entrance to the Lora Robins Gallery will be constructed on level B1. For the first time, students and faculty will move freely between the library and the gallery.

We look forward to the fantastic opportunities these renovations will create for collaborative programming, enhanced learning opportunities for students, and joint initiatives between the University Museums and the University Libraries. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding this work, access to materials during construction, or other library services.

As we embark upon the new academic year, the University of Richmond Libraries remain committed to achieving our mission, living our values, and pursuing a path to inclusive excellence. I am in awe of my library colleagues, all of whom look forward to supporting you in the coming year.
